The team competed on News 5 Cleveland Academic Challenge, where they defeated Open Door and Rittman High Schools with a score of 615, earning a spot in the program’s Top 10 for the second consecutive season.
Elyria Catholic also captured the championship of the WDLW Scholastic Games of Lorain County for the first time in the quiz show’s 36-year history. The Panthers defeated Black River High School in the finals with a score of 400–160. Team captain and Elyria Catholic valedictorian Vito Coreno was named Standout Scholar three times during the competition, while fellow Panther Maria Ochenas earned the honor in the first radio match. In addition to Vito and Maria, junior Noah Hanlon participated and sophomore Collin Oberdick was the team’s alternate competitor.
Besides the television and radio competitions, the team also competed in several academic leagues this year, including the Erie Shores Academic League in the fall and the Lorain County 8 League in the winter. Elyria Catholic won the Lorain County 8 League championship as well. We look forward to seeing the team shine again in the 26-27 school year.
